Virgo and the Mutable Modality: Determined agent for change

Virgo is a sign that is always improving, finding new opportunities to sharpen and refine themselves. But what is it about Virgo that makes it so determined to change for the better?

Virgo is a mutable sign of the Zodiac. The essence of mutable mode is to bring about change. The adaptable and resourceful mutable modality, plus the earth element and Mercury influence, inspire Virgo to see imperfections where others may not, and then to work eagerly to improve them.

The mutable modality plays the part of an agent for change in astrology. Keep reading to learn more about Virgo’s mutable mode and how it could be at play in your life!

The mutable modality

Every season feels like it may last forever, but at some point, change is inevitable. Toward the end of each season, there is a period where the winds sometimes feel different, the temperatures can vary greatly from one day to the next, and one season seems to blend into the other. This description is the nature of the mutable modality. The essence of the mutable mode is to either spark or welcome change and adjust to them as needed.

The three modes in astrology, cardinal, fixed, and mutable, are collectively referred to as the quadruplicities in astrology. The three modes each describe a unique way to react to your environment, how you adapt to change, and what kinds of action you may be most apt to take. With the quadruplicity system, if you mark each sign of a mode, either cardinal, fixed, or mutable, on a natal chart, the positions of the sign form a cross.

In the chart above, I have labeled Virgo, along with the other signs that share the mutable mode, Gemini, Sagittarius, and Pisces. You can see how their placement forms a cross on the chart. Each sign behind a mutable sign is a fixed sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius), and the one ahead of it is a cardinal sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn).

The cardinal, fixed, and mutable modes of the quadruplicity system together describe the transition each season goes through, from the fresh, new ambitious beginning of a season, through the long, slow, and steady time in the middle, and finally the period at the end where change begins. Mutable mode for Virgo signifies the end of summer and the transformation into the beginning of autumn.

How mutable mode comes out in Virgo

The mutable modality influences Virgo to not simply be flexible to change but to actually seek out and spark transformation themselves. Virgo is a sign that is continuously working to bring about changes that will improve themselves, the world around them, or to use their gifts to help bring change to the people in their lives.

You can see in the birth chart illustration from the last section that Virgo isn’t the only mutable sign in the Zodiac. It shares this mode with Gemini, Sagittarius, and Pisces. However, because each of these signs is also inspired by a different element and each has a ruling planet that helps to shape it, none of them express their mutable mode in the exact same way. Virgo is also influenced by the earth element and its ruler, Mercury.

For Virgo, its mutable modality is mixed with the focused and resourceful earth element. This combination makes Virgo a sign that sees things clearly for what they are now and also what they could become. Virgo sees potential. Unemotionally, they are able to define the differences between the current state of something and what it could become when it reaches perfection. Their analytic eye could be pointed at an environment they exist in, an organization, or people in their lives, but often it is directed at themselves.

The earth element adds a hefty dose of stability, determination, and practicality to Virgo, allowing it to spot imperfections within themselves or others in a detached way that doesn’t let emotions get involved. Because of this Virgo can simply assess what needs to be changed, put their nose to the grindstone, and meticulously perfect it.

Mercury is the ruling planet of Virgo. This is a planet of communication, logic, and learning. Wit, intellect, observation, and collecting data is the realm of Mercury. To Virgo’s mixture of transformative mutable energy and stable earth energy, Mercury adds brains.

Mercury influences Virgo to shine its mutable modality by learning as much about a skill as it possibly can. Virgo wants to hone and perfect that skill through determination, experience, and hard work until they become accomplished in it. Mercury also inspires them to seek out a teacher that has already mastered this skill that they can humbly learn from. Once Virgo is competent in this skill, they have the desire to use it as a change agent to help others.

This sign is reliable, mature, and detail-oriented, but they can also be caring, have a great sense of humor, and can be very generous when it comes to lending a hand to others. Because of their earth element, they may not be as spontaneous or go-with-the-flow as the other mutable signs. But, their capacity to transform is incredible due to their strong work ethic and fondness for precision.

Virgo’s mutable modality, along with its earth element and Mercury influence, gives Virgo a critical eye and unwavering determination. However, even good things, when out of balance, can create challenges. Virgo’s critical eye can be difficult to turn off, giving it the potential to be a sign that is never satisfied. Their attention to detail, when taken too far, can become nit-picky perfectionism that either turns others off or halts their personal growth to a near stand-still. And, Virgo’s incredible work ethic and crusade for improvement could bring about workaholic tendencies. If their analytical minds have taken aim at their health, which it often can in Virgo, this could lead to unhealthy habits such as too much exercise or too restrictive of a diet if out of balance.

There is no sign in the Zodiac that doesn’t run the risk of turning their strengths into stumbling blocks if pushed too far. If Virgo can find balance, their transformative mutable modality can help them to see great potential in themselves or the people in their lives and can help spark positive change in the world around them.
