What is My Rising Sign: Where the rising sign is in your chart

When you are new to astrology, there is so much to learn that it can feel a little overwhelming at first. Signs, planets, houses, aspects, transits, there are a lot of new terms to remember and understand. Rising sign is one that you will hear about a lot when learning to read birth charts, but what is your rising sign and where is it on your natal chart?

Your rising sign is the sign of the Zodiac that is on the cusp, or line, of the 1st house of your birth chart. The 1st house is also called the Ascendant and it defines your outward personality. The sign of your Ascendant, your rising sign, will help describe the character you show to the world.

So what is your rising sign and what types of clues can it give you about how you interact with life? Read on to learn more!

How to Find My Rising Sign

The first step is to get a copy of your birth chart. The website, Astrodienst, is what many beginning astrologers use because they are quality charts, they give you options for many different settings, and they will save as many charts as you like for free. Create a login, enter your exact birth time and place, and up will pop your birth chart, ready to explore!

On your chart, look for a line on the left-hand side that has a “1” underneath it. This line marks the beginning of the 1st house, also referred to as the Ascendant.

In the example chart above, I circled the “1” so you could easily see the line for the 1st house above it. Where these lines touch the signs in the chart are often referred to as cusps. You can see that just outside the chart is the abbreviation, “AC.” This is short for the Ascendant. So, the cusp of the 1st house, the Ascendant, points to Sagittarius in this chart. Sagittarius is their rising sign.

What happens if your Ascendant is drawn perfectly between two signs? Some astrologers draw their charts differently in a way where this may be the case! This is called the whole house system and the lines for the houses will always be on the border between two signs. If this is the case, the sign of the Zodiac below the Ascendant will be your rising sign.

What is a Rising Sign

The rising sign is the sign of the Zodiac that sits at the start of the 1st house in your natal chart, also called the Ascendant. The 1st house is the structure for your outward personality. Your rising sign will offer details as to the qualities of your character and how you perceive the world.

The rising sign and Ascendant are often used interchangeably in astrology, and while they are often referring to the same thing, they aren’t exactly the same. The Ascendant is the cusp of the 1st house. It is one specific point on the chart and it defines your social identity and both how you come at the world and how you perceive it. Often it is described as the social mask we wear.

The rising sign, then, is the sign of the Zodiac that this point lands in. Each sign has a specific set of needs, motivations, strengths, and challenges, and these qualities are infused into the 1st house Ascendant and into your personality.

Your rising sign is often how the people in your life would describe you. It also describes the style in which you can navigate life that will feel “right” and help move you closer to your higher purpose and further growth as a person.

For instance, in the chart example shown above, their rising sign is Sagittarius. This person’s friends and family may describe them as funny, optimistic, spontaneous, and maybe even someone who can’t sit still. Because the rising sign also flavors how we see the world, this person may see the world as a giant mystery that they need to explore. They may see a life full of endless possibilities.

Now find your rising sign on your chart and use the table below to get a general idea of how your rising sign could affect how others see you and how you see the world.

Rising Sign and the Chart Ruler

There seem to be endless layers in astrology. You learn about one concept and feel good about it, only to find that there are yet more details to that concept that will add more definition and detail to your chart reading. In the case of your rising sign, the next layer is your chart ruler.

Every sign in the Zodiac has a planet that rules it. You can find a table showing planetary rulerships, and more about the relationships between the rising sign, Ascendant, and chart rulers, in our article here.

The planetary ruler of your rising sign is called your chart ruler. Some astrologers have differing views on the level of importance of the chart ruler in your natal chart, but most agree that it is definitely influential.

Where your chart ruler is positioned in your chart and its condition will add more particulars to your experience with the 1st house. The sign it is in will also be infused into your personality and the house your chart ruler sits in plays an important role, as well. Many astrologers read the chart ruler as something that will be a theme of your life, something that will play out over and over again, as well as something that you will need to successfully navigate to be able to grow more as a person.

For instance, let’s say that your rising sign is Capricorn. According to the chart here, your chart ruler is Mars. Now, let’s say that in your natal chart, Mars sits in Cancer in the 7th house. Mars is a planet that asks you to fight for something. Wherever Mars sits is an area of life that you know you will need to come at boldly and with courage, ready for battle. Cancer is a sign that cares for their home and loved ones. They have deep emotions and a need to lead with their feelings. The 7th house is the House of Marriage and covers the territory of intimate relationships and being able to see from someone else’s point of view.

Put all of this together and a theme that may run through your life (for the purposes of this example only) may be that you need to fight hard (Mars) to be there for your partner by trying to see things through their eyes (7th house). To do this well, you need to remember to lead with your heart and feelings (Cancer), not your head. And, if we remember that for this example we said that your rising sign is Capricorn, a sign that can be reserved, austere, and struggle to show their feelings, this could be one of life’s biggest challenges.

This is an incredibly general description, but it gives you an idea of what kinds of information and clues the chart ruler could give you about your life and areas you could consciously focus on to grow as a person. These may be things that are completely in our blind spots until learning about the chart ruler opens our eyes to it.

Your rising sign can offer a lot of valuable information about how you might see the world, and also how others may see you. It is a vital piece in your astrological puzzle and one that warrants further exploration.
